First Plan of Action After Bariatric Surgery? Reduce Alcohol Consumption!

by Sheri Burke

A cold beer after a rough day at work is relaxing for some.

Bubbly champagne is associated with celebrations—weddings, promotions, parties.

Alcohol is an essential part of our social settings. Gone under the knife recently? If yes, your alcohol consumption should be reduced or limited.

In fact, people living the bariatric way should consider eliminating this from their diet altogether!

There are several reasons to reduce or completely limit alcohol consumption for bariatric patients!

Faster Inebriation with Fewer Drinks

It doesn’t matter if gastric bypass patients limit their alcohol intake. They may not realize but even a few alcoholic drinks can inebriate them, much faster. This happens because alcohol will now travel to the smaller intestine more quickly than it did before surgery. Blood alcohol levels can rise up due to quicker absorption, making drinking dangerous.

Higher Chances of Addiction Substitution

This is an issue that is often overlooked by bariatric patients. Many don’t realize their obesity problem may hide behind a deep seated psychological component.

In fact, there are a lot of cases where patients latch on to food to compensate for something. So patients are more likely to replace food with alcohol after their gastric sleeve surgery. Patients with a history of substance abuse are particularly prone to this behavior.

Limited Alcohol Consumption – Its Many Benefits

Are you counting your calorie intake? Drinking alcohol fills a stomach with empty calories, preventing the organ to absorb important and needed nutrients.

Don’t think about limiting alcohol from your diet. Just do it! These benefits will help sway your mind easier:

Encourages Maximum Weight Loss

There are 85 calories in a glass of red wine. Drinking beer provides 43 ‘empty’ calories meaning there is absolutely zero nutritional value. Consuming alcohol during your period of rapid weight-loss will impede the process, preventing your stomach from getting proper nutrition. Optimal and healthy weight-loss results won’t be achieved.

Ensures You Receive Adequate Protein

Expert bariatric surgeon in Mexico Dr. Verboonen recommends a high protein intake for patients after gastric sleeve surgery.

In fact, protein consumption is important to overall health! Without adequate protein and other essential nutrients, your weight loss will show up as loss of muscle tissue. Protein rich diet ensures that the weight-loss takes place by attacking fat reserves in the body.

Reduces Risk of Dehydration

It is important to drink the recommended amount of water after bariatric surgery. However alcohol consumption makes drinking water secondary, increasing the risk of dehydration.

Since alcohol already increases this risk, patients must prioritize water over alcohol.

Does this mean there is no place for alcohol in the social life of a bariatric patient? Moderate consumption can be allowed in the post-surgical diet, should you choose to drink after your gastric sleeve procedure.

However, this must be done under guidance of your surgeon. Find leading gastric bypass surgeons in Mexico with our help!

10 Day No Sugar Challenge Bariatric Patients

by Sheri Burke

Hey Bariatric Pre Ops and Post Ops!  Are you craving sugar ?  Let’s chat…

Scientists have found that sugar is addictive and stimulates the same pleasure centers of the brain as cocaine or heroin. Just like those hard-core drugs, getting off sugar leads to withdrawal and cravings, requiring an actual detox process to wean off.

Do you know how much sugar you eat during the day (be honest!), and then use ingredient labels or simply Google how many grams of sugar each food has and count.

The World Health Organization recommends about 25g (or less!) added sugar per day.

This is because excess sugar intake can spike your blood sugar levels, cause you to feel more hungry, have mood swings, store excess fat, and worse… can cause diabetes and a whole host of other issues.

Think you may be consuming too much sugar? Here are a few ways you can reduce your daily sugar consumption:

  • Be more aware of what’s in the food you’re eating by reading the labels.
  • Drink more water, especially when you feel like snacking (because cravings could be a sign of dehydration!)
  • Try using Stevia (which won’t raise blood sugar).
  • Have a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner (so you’ll be less hungry afterwards and won’t go around hunting for snacks.)
  • Try preparing your meals at home instead of eating out, because that’s one of the surest ways to control what you are eating.

So let’s kick this inflammation-causing fire-starter to the curb and not invite it into your body in the first place.

Let’s try something 10 days.  Let’s try to keep added sugars to UNDER 25 grams per day!   Sugar that is naturally occurring in the whole foods that you’re eating is ok.

This means that any recipe that has “sugar” in it should get shuffled to the back of the box!  This also means you need to limit the sugar in your coffee and check EVERY label of everything you’re eating this week!

Let’s Chat Protein Basics

by Sheri Burke

“Eat More Protein” – are you tired of hearing about it ?

Let’s Chat Protein Basics

The worn out bariatric expression “Eat More Protein” – are you tired of hearing about it ?  Let’s break it down so you too can become the protein pro !

Protein can be found in which foods ?

You can find protein in chicken and fish and meat.  For our fellow vegetarians, and those who are less then thrilled about eating meat, some protein options are: eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and beans.

So how much protein do I really need ?

It’s important to aim for 60 to 80 grams of protein per day.  If you have a kidney issue it may be significantly lower so ask your nutritionist who specialises with bariatric patients to get you the correct protein prescription for your specific case.

Can I eat too much protein ?

It’s easy to get up to 80 grams of protein per day if you are drinking two protein shakes, along with various servings of protein per day.  It’s important to know that your body is not able to absorb more than 30 grams of protein in one sitting so if your shakes or bars or meal replacements are promising you more than 30 grams per serving – don’t believe that your body will absorb all that protein at one sitting.

How important is protein really ?

Let’s just say that you need your daily protein for repair work and cell building/ transportation.  If you don’t feed your body sufficient protein, it’s going to take it from your muscles where protein has been stored.  Doesn’t it just make more sense to eat your protein instead of stealing it from your own body ?

Why as a Bariatric Patient do I require Vitamin D3 ?

by Sheri Burke

Why would a doctor recommend bariatric surgery with the expectation of taking vitamins for a long while? Isn’t VSG a reduction surgery, not malabsorption?  Why would vitamins be required ?

Almost all of the vitamins and minerals that we get come from our food.  Couple this with the knowledge of what is in the standard American diet and you can see why many experts recommend that EVERY adult take vitamins even if they have never had bariatric surgery!.

With all bariatric procedures vitamins are necessary. It is true that the sleeve gastrectomy is not a malabsorptive procedure however due to the fact that you are eating 80 to 90% less you may become vitamin deficient.  You may not be able to get enough vitamins in with the small amount that you eat.

Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential to help your body absorb calcium. Vitamin D is difficult to absorb normally and is even more difficult for bariatric patients to absorb. Most bariatric surgeons recommend at least a daily dose of 1,000 IU vitamin D supplement.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium you consume. Most of us aren’t getting enough vitamin D, which has set the stage for a vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency epidemic. Few foods contain vitamin D. Some milk is fortified with it and it is also fortified in some brands of orange juice, yogurt and breakfast cereal. Egg yolks, liver and some types of fish naturally contain vitamin D.

Think you may be time to supplement vitamin D ?  Here is a superb way for bariatric patients to get it now on Amazon:  Bariatric Expert Vitamin D

New Habits – Our New Normal – Bariatric

by Sheri Burke

Bariatric surgery is great.  It gives patients back their life.  They get their health back.  They are able to stop all sorts of medications.  They can get on airplanes with no seat extender.  They go to the amusement parks with their kids.  It is life-changing.  There are some things that bariatric surgery cannot change.  Habits such as compulsive eating cannot be resolved through surgery.

One of the many reasons patients decide to proceed with surgery is to assist them with their compulsive overeating.  When a patient arrives to the operating table, he or she has been overeating for many years.  The result is a stretched out stomach which requires a lot of food to feel satisfied.  On top of this, patients many have used overeating and food to deal with stressful situations.  Post surgery, this coping mechanism is no longer available.  What’s a post op patients to do ?

Now is the time to switch our focus on improving those bad habits that helped get us into trouble in the first place.

Let’s pick just one goal to deal with at a time.  Sure, there are plenty of ways to help with compulsive eating but let’s not get overwhelmed and try to do everything at the same time.  Remember that change is a process and it will happen but you can only take one step at a time.

Drink a lot of water.  I know you are tired of hearing this.  Drinking water does not cure everything but many times when we think we are hungry we are really dehydrated.  If you feel like you are hungry all the time and want to bite off your arm, have a glass of water first.  Reach for a glass of water before you reach for a snack.

Don’t multitask when eating.  Don’t eat when you are standing up.  Don’t eat in front of the television.  Don’t eat while on the telephone.  The idea here is that digestion starts from the sight and smell of food so your focus needs to be on what you are eating and not what you are doing besides eating.  By not paying attention to your food you are more likely to overeat so even if it’s only a snack, sit down and eat with zero distractions.

We always have to remember that the bariatric surgery that you had is only a tool and it’s the beginning of your journey.  If we want to be successful post surgery, there are habits that must change also.  Let’s try to think of life post surgery and new found habits and lifestyle changes as “the new normal”.  What we are aiming for is to not return to old bad habits and to make permanent long lasting changes for many years of super health.

Got Botched Cosmetic Surgery Results Back Home? Repair, Revise and Fix It

by Sheri Burke

They say fame has a price. What they don’t specify is the price famous people have to pay for it.

Most people in Hollywood have reportedly had nips and tucks to give a lift to their careers. Even celebrity icons like Marilyn Monroe had a little work done!

Plastic, cosmetic and aesthetic procedures give people ‘the look’ they have always wanted. However, sometimes things go wrong.

Every year, more than 15.6 million cosmetic procedures take place. Reconstructive procedures are less in number, only about 5.6 million. There is a slight possibility your facelift or cheek implant might go horribly wrong, which is why you should research thoroughly before going under the knife.

Visit a Specialized Mexico Surgeon for Reconstructive Surgery/Revision

International Patient Facilitators will help you find an accredited Mexican cosmetic surgeon or practice that specializes in fixing botched surgery. It’s important to know not all botched cosmetic surgeries are due to surgeon’s mistake.

Some plastic and aesthetic surgeries are more complex than others, causing the body to place a natural limitation on result. You may have to look for a qualified cosmetic surgeon for the following surgeries gone wrong.

Swollen Lips

Many women have been inspired by the Kardasians, especially Kylie Jenner and Kim K. Many have had their lips injected with enhancers to emulate Kylie Jenner’s voluptuous lips! Swollen lips and a lopsided mouth are the result.

Asymmetric Breasts

Droopy breasts are the result of a botched breast augmentation procedure. Not only do droopy breasts ruin a body’s shape but can make life difficult regarding clothing. Cosmetic surgeons in Mexico are equipped to fix droopy breasts resulting from a previous breast augmentation procedure.

Wrinkling Breast Implants

This can be seen over the breast tissue, especially when you bend. What causes rippling and wrinkling of breast implants?

  • Under-filling/overfilling breast implant
  • Poor amount of breast tissue coverage
  • Wrong placement of breast implant

Botched Nose Job

Each year, nearly 15 million nose surgeries go wrong in the United States. In addition to cosmetic reasons, people dealing with breathing problems choose rhinoplasty revision. This is done by taking cartilage from the ear and skin (from scalp).

Leakage in Breast Implant

Implant leakage can cause fibrous tissue inflammation or formation of scar tissue. Here is how you will know of leakage in your breast implant:

  • Lumps
  • Swelling or pain in breast
  • Changes in breast shape or size
  • Hardening or softening

Paying for revision cosmetic surgery at a U.S. practice might put a dent in your wallet especially without medical insurance. International Patient Facilitators can help you find an affordable yet accredited cosmetic specialist to bring your body back to how it should have been. Fill the given medical form now.
