Why as a Bariatric Patient do I require Vitamin D3 ?

Why would a doctor recommend bariatric surgery with the expectation of taking vitamins for a long while? Isn’t VSG a reduction surgery, not malabsorption?  Why would vitamins be required ?

Almost all of the vitamins and minerals that we get come from our food.  Couple this with the knowledge of what is in the standard American diet and you can see why many experts recommend that EVERY adult take vitamins even if they have never had bariatric surgery!.

With all bariatric procedures vitamins are necessary. It is true that the sleeve gastrectomy is not a malabsorptive procedure however due to the fact that you are eating 80 to 90% less you may become vitamin deficient.  You may not be able to get enough vitamins in with the small amount that you eat.

Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential to help your body absorb calcium. Vitamin D is difficult to absorb normally and is even more difficult for bariatric patients to absorb. Most bariatric surgeons recommend at least a daily dose of 1,000 IU vitamin D supplement.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium you consume. Most of us aren’t getting enough vitamin D, which has set the stage for a vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency epidemic. Few foods contain vitamin D. Some milk is fortified with it and it is also fortified in some brands of orange juice, yogurt and breakfast cereal. Egg yolks, liver and some types of fish naturally contain vitamin D.

Think you may be time to supplement vitamin D ?  Here is a superb way for bariatric patients to get it now on Amazon:  Bariatric Expert Vitamin D
