Maximizing your Bariatric Results – Bariatric Edition

by Sheri Burke

Your Bariatric surgery is a tool. How you decide to use that tool makes all the difference between you reaching or not reaching your goals – short and long-term.

I promote eating “real food” post-weight loss surgery. I cannot stress this enough.

What’s “real food”? It’s what you find on the outside aisles of the supermarket. It’s your meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, fruit, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

The surgery works by reducing the size of the stomach, which means that patients cannot eat as much food as they used to. However, even after bariatric surgery, it’s important to ensure a proper diet to maintain good health and maximize the benefits of the surgery.

Here are some tips to ensure the proper diet after any bariatric surgery:

  1. Follow the dietary guidelines given by your nutritionist

After bariatric surgery, your nutritionist (that’s me!!) will provide you with a set of dietary guidelines to follow. These guidelines are tailored to your specific needs and are designed to ensure that you are getting the right amount of nutrients while also limiting your intake of food. It’s important to follow these guidelines closely, as they will help you to avoid complications and ensure that you are getting the nutrients your body needs.

  1. Focus on protein-rich foods

Protein is an essential nutrient that is important for building and repairing tissues in the body. After bariatric surgery, it’s important to focus on getting enough protein in your diet to support the healing process and prevent muscle loss. Good sources of protein include lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Aim to get at least 60 grams of protein per day, depending on your individual needs. If you have questions regarding your specific protein requirements, reach out to me. I can help you calculate it

  1. Avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar, and calories

While it’s important to get enough nutrients in your diet, it’s also important to avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar, and calories. These foods can contribute to weight gain and can also increase your risk of developing other health problems. Instead, focus on nutrient-dense foods such as low-sugar fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

  1. Eat small, meals throughout the day – don’t’ graze

After bariatric surgery, it’s not easy to eat a lot of food in one sitting. Instead, it’s better to eat 3 to 4 small meals throughout the day. This will help to ensure that you are getting enough nutrients without overloading your stomach. Aim to eat 3 to 4 small meals per day, and avoid grazing between meals to prevent overeating.

  1. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is important for good health, and it’s especially important after bariatric surgery. Aim to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day, and avoid drinking fluids with meals to prevent overfilling of your pouch.

  1. Take vitamin and mineral supplements

After bariatric surgery, your body may have difficulty absorbing certain nutrients. You are also eating very little. To ensure that you are getting the right amount of nutrients, you should take vitamin and mineral supplements. I provide you with recommendations for the supplements that you need to take, and it’s important to follow these recommendations closely. www.bariatricfoodexpert.com

Ensuring the proper diet after bariatric surgery is essential for good health and successful weight loss. It’s important to follow the dietary guidelines provided by your nutritionist, focus on protein-rich foods, avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar, and calories, eat 3-4 small, meals throughout the day, stay hydrated, take vitamin and mineral supplements, and avoid alcohol and smoking.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you are getting the nutrients your body needs and maximizing the benefits of your bariatric surgery.

I am always here to answer any of your questions. If you are unsure about something, reach out. I have my hand on your back and together we can ensure you have the correct diet for your specific requirements.

Healthy Hugs,

Sheri Burke

Listen Up Bariatric Newbies – Bariatric Edition

by Sheri Burke

We’ve all been there: the excitement of starting a new health and wellness journey, the dedication to the process, the willpower to resist temptation, and the satisfaction of seeing results.

We’ve had our bariatric surgery, we have our tool. It’s clear sailing from here … here we come weight loss and wellness!

But then, life gets in the way, and our commitments to ourselves start to slide. The next thing we know, we’re back to our old habits, feeling disappointed in ourselves and wondering where we went wrong.

It doesn’t happen quickly.  It happens slowly.  We go from losing a great deal of weight, to stalling out, to losing 1 to 2 pounds a week.  Somewhere along the line we get busy and lose focus.

It’s essential to realize that surgery and then willpower can only get us so far. It’s not enough to just want to be healthy; we need to be dedicated to the process of getting there. We need to put lifestyle changes into place that will help us reach our goals. This means taking action on a daily basis and making a commitment to ourselves and our health.

One of the keys to success is starting small. Small steps lead to big changes, and this is especially true when it comes to health and wellness. If you find yourself sliding back into some bad habits, take action today. Don’t wait until tomorrow, next week, or next month.

The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get back on track.

If you find yourself snacking on unhealthy foods, prepare healthy snacks to keep your hand out of the candy bag. Cut up some vegetables, make a fruit salad, or prepare some homemade hummus. These small changes can make a big difference in your diet.

If you’re going to bed again at midnight, get yourself to bed an hour earlier. Lack of sleep can have a negative impact on your health, and it’s important to get enough rest each night. Set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it, even on the weekends.

Don’t allow Netflix (or any other distractions) to derail your health plans. It’s easy to get sucked into a TV show and lose track of time. Set a limit for how much TV you watch each day, and stick to it. Make sure you prioritize exercise and other healthy habits over watching TV.

If you have allowed two days of inactivity to turn into two weeks, enough is enough. It’s time to get back on track. Place your workout gear next to your bed or in a visible location to remind yourself to exercise. Join a fitness class or enlist a workout buddy to keep you accountable. Find activities you enjoy, whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or yoga. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore; it can be something you look forward to each day.

Another important aspect of recommitting to ourselves and our health goals is taking control of our external environment. There are so many little things we can do to make it easier to get back on track and focus on the goals we want to achieve. For example:

  • Meal prep: Plan your meals for the week ahead of time and prepare them in advance. This will make it easier to stick to a healthy diet, even when you’re busy.
  •  Keep healthy snacks on hand: Stock up on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other healthy snacks so you’re not tempted to reach for junk food when you’re hungry.
  • Get rid of unhealthy foods: If you have junk food in your house, you’re more likely to eat it. Get rid of any unhealthy foods and replace them with healthier options.
  •  Make it easy to exercise: Keep your workout gear in a visible location, join a gym or fitness class, or find an exercise buddy to keep you accountable.
  • Create a positive environment: Surround yourself with positive influences and people who support your health goals. Avoid negative influences and situations that can derail your progress.

Finally, it’s important to remember that recommitting to ourselves and our health goals is a process. It’s not something that happens overnight, and there will be setbacks along the way. The key is to keep moving forward, even when we find that we have slid back a few steps.

I am rooting for you.  I have my hand gently on your back.

Hey, you’ve got this!

Healthy Hugs,

Sheri Burke

Why come to TJ for our bariatric beach reunion JUNE-2023

by Sheri Burke

June 16-18, 2023?

Hey!  It’s beach party time. Who’s coming?

It’s great to have a big online support group where we chat, send likes, heart emojis, uplift each other, and share personal stories, triumphs, downfalls, etc.

Wouldn’t it be great to actually meet up once a year or even twice a year?  Imagine how important that meet-up would be to keep us all on track.  We would be solidifying our online friendships and bringing them from the screen to real life.

It’s huge.

Here is what myself and Dr. Verboonen have planned for all of you.  We want to celebrate you.

June 16th arrival to San Diego airport, get transportation to the Grand Hotel in TJ for check-in.  Light dinner @7pm (snacks and drinks).

June 17th minivans will collect us at the hotel lobby and take us to Rosarito Beach (15 miles from the Grand Hotel).

We have a private beach event set up for you.  There will be a beach (obviously), private pool, jacuzzi, tons of delicious food/ drinks, and Mariachis!

The transportation will take us back to the Grand Hotel when the party is over.

June 18th return home/transportation collects you 3 hours prior to your flight departure time (at the Grand Hotel lobby) to return to the airport.

*if you would like to stay longer in TJ, you are welcome to stay additional nights. I have a special rate at the hotel for our guests.

So what will this all cost?

1/ Flights to San Diego

2/ Grand hotel rate is 110us with taxes included (per room) per night.

3/ Ground transportation/ airport-hotel and hotel-airport = 160us round trip.

We are covering the ground transportation (round trip) to the beach from the Grand Hotel, and the entire event with food, drinks, and music.

This is a great way to see TJ, get your toes in the sand, eat some really great Mexican food, live a Mexican beach party experience, hug your bariatric surgeon, and do a “happy dance” with me and the rest of your support group.

Who’s coming?  Email me back at s.burke@ipf-mail.com , or send me a text message at 1 819 230 9763, or reach out to me on FB messenger.

Bring your friends and family or come alone.  Let’s celebrate and make some real memories.

Healthy Hugs,

Sheri Burke

Share, or don’t share.  It’s up to you.  I have a feeling that you are going to see some changes in a very short amount of time.

The power of whole, live, fresh, natural good quality food.
