Embracing Gratitude on Your Bariatric Journey: A Thanksgiving Celebration – Bariatric Edition

by Sheri Burke

Thanksgiving is more than a feast; it’s a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives, and for those on a bariatric journey, it’s an opportunity to embrace gratitude for the transformative path they’ve chosen. As we gather around tables filled with gratitude and traditional dishes, let’s explore the spirit of Thanksgiving and how it beautifully aligns with the essence of a bariatric journey.

Thankful for Transformation:

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery is a transformative step toward improved health and well-being. Take a moment to be thankful for the courage it took to embark on this journey and the resilience demonstrated along the way. Celebrate the progress made, both big and small.

Gratitude for Supportive Relationships:

A bariatric journey is rarely taken alone. Express gratitude for the support of family, friends, and perhaps fellow bariatric warriors. Share the joy of the journey with those who have stood by you, offering encouragement and understanding during both triumphs and challenges.

Appreciation for a Healthier Lifestyle:

As you savor the Thanksgiving meal, appreciate the healthier choices that have become a natural part of your lifestyle. Celebrate mindful eating habits, the incorporation of nutrient-dense foods, and the positive changes that contribute to your well-being.

Thanksgiving Traditions Reinvented:

The traditions of Thanksgiving can be reimagined to align with your bariatric journey. Consider introducing new, healthier recipes to the table or incorporating physical activities into your holiday traditions. A family walk after the feast can become a cherished part of your Thanksgiving routine.

Gratitude for a Stronger Mindset:

A bariatric journey is not just physical; it’s a transformation of the mind as well. Be grateful for the mental strength developed along the way. The ability to overcome obstacles, shift perspectives, and cultivate a positive mindset is a significant aspect of your journey.

Expressing Thanks through Acts of Kindness:

Extend the spirit of Thanksgiving by expressing gratitude through acts of kindness. Whether it’s volunteering, supporting others on their health journey, or simply offering a word of encouragement, spreading positivity can deepen your own sense of gratitude.

Reflecting on Resilience:

Thanksgiving is an excellent time to reflect on the resilience that brought you through challenging moments on your journey. Recognize the strength within yourself that has allowed you to persevere and overcome obstacles, emerging stronger on the other side.

Grateful for Second Chances:

Your bariatric journey represents a second chance at a healthier and more fulfilling life. Be grateful for the opportunities that have opened up, the experiences you’ve gained, and the chance to make the most of this precious gift.

This Thanksgiving, let gratitude be the centerpiece of your celebration. Embrace the spirit of thankfulness for the positive changes, supportive relationships, and newfound strength that define your bariatric journey. As you gather with loved ones, savor each moment, expressing gratitude not just for the feast on the table but for the abundance of blessings that shape your bariatric story.

Healthy Hugs and Happy Thanksgiving,

Healthy Hugs,

Navigating Thanksgiving After Bariatric Surgery – Bariatric Edition

by Sheri Burke

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family, and, of course, a feast. For those who have undergone bariatric surgery, navigating social events like Thanksgiving can bring unique challenges. However, with a bit of planning and mindful choices, you can enjoy the holiday without compromising your health goals.

**1. Plan Your Plate:

Before filling your plate, survey the options. Choose protein-rich dishes like turkey or lean meat as the centerpiece. Fill the rest of your plate with colorful, non-starchy vegetables. Limit portions of high-calorie, high-sugar, and high-fat foods.

**2. Hydrate and Pace Yourself:

Start your meal with water and take sips between bites. This not only aids digestion but also helps you recognize when you’re full. Eat slowly, savoring each bite. This mindful approach allows your body to signal satiety, preventing overeating.

**3. Bring a Bariatric-Friendly Dish:

If you’re attending a gathering, consider bringing a dish that aligns with your dietary needs. A colorful salad, roasted vegetables, or a protein-rich side can be a great addition to the table and ensures there’s a healthy option for you.

**4. Embrace the Protein:

Turkey is a Thanksgiving staple and a great choice for bariatric patients. It’s rich in protein, which helps maintain muscle mass during weight loss. Avoid the skin and opt for white meat to keep it lean.

**5. Navigate the Sides Wisely:

While traditional Thanksgiving sides may be heavy on carbs, there are often healthier alternatives. Choose roasted vegetables, a small serving of sweet potatoes without excessive toppings, and opt for whole grains if available.

**6. Watch the Liquid Calories:

Beverages can contribute significantly to your calorie intake. Opt for water or other low-calorie, non-sweetened options. If you choose to indulge in an alcoholic beverage, do so mindfully, and be aware of the extra calories.

**7. Listen to Your Body:

Pay attention to your body’s signals. If you start feeling full, pause and assess. Remember, you’re not obligated to finish everything on your plate. Listen to your body’s cues, and stop eating when you feel satisfied.

**8. Stay Active:

Incorporate some physical activity into your Thanksgiving celebration. Whether it’s a pre-meal walk, a post-dinner stroll, or a friendly family game, staying active can help balance the extra calories and contribute to your overall well-being.

**9. Create a Support System:

Communicate with your family and friends about your dietary needs and goals. Having a supportive environment can make a significant difference. Share your journey and let them know how they can contribute to your success.

**10. Remember the True Meaning:

Thanksgiving is about gratitude and spending time with loved ones. Focus on the joy of being together rather than solely on the food. Engage in meaningful conversations, create memories, and express gratitude for your health and the journey you’re on.

By approaching Thanksgiving with mindfulness and planning, you can savor the holiday without compromising your commitment to health. Enjoy the festivities, embrace the spirit of gratitude, and celebrate the progress you’ve made on your bariatric journey.

The Emotional Side of Bariatric Surgery – Bariatric Edition

by Sheri Burke

Navigating the Journey

Bariatric surgery is a life-changing decision that goes beyond just physical transformation. It also involves a profound emotional journey. Let’s explore the emotional aspects of bariatric surgery with suggestions on how to navigate this transformative process.

The Decision

The decision to pursue bariatric surgery is not one that is taken lightly. It often stems from a deep well of emotions – a desire for improved health, increased confidence, and a better quality of life. This journey begins with a courageous decision, driven by the hope for a healthier future.

Pre-Surgery Emotions

As the surgery date approaches, a mix of emotions washes over individuals. There’s excitement about the positive changes that lie ahead, but there can also be anxiety and fear of the unknown. It’s during this phase that emotional support from friends, family, or support groups becomes invaluable. The reassurance and understanding of others who have walked this path are like a comforting hand on your shoulder.

The Surgery Day

The day of surgery can be emotionally intense. The anticipation, the sterile surroundings, and the realization that this is the moment of transformation can trigger a whirlwind of emotions. It’s here that healthcare providers play a vital role, offering both medical expertise and the human touch to ease anxieties and provide guidance.

Post-Surgery Adjustments

Following bariatric surgery, individuals often experience a rollercoaster of emotions. Physical discomfort and adjusting to new eating habits can be challenging. It’s important to remember that this journey is a process, and patience and self-compassion are essential. Every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory.

Body Image and Self-Esteem

As weight loss becomes apparent, changes in body image and self-esteem are common. Rapid weight loss can leave individuals feeling like they’re in a new body, which can be emotionally challenging. It’s important to cultivate a positive self-image and self-worth throughout the journey. Remember, the way you feel about yourself is just as important as the way you look.

Support Systems

Support, both emotional and practical, is a cornerstone of bariatric success. Connecting with others who share a similar journey can provide solace and encouragement. Support groups, whether in person or online, can become a lifeline, offering understanding and a sense of community. Additionally, healthcare providers play a crucial role in offering emotional support and guidance.

Coping with Changes

Emotional challenges are part of the journey, and there are ways to cope. Journaling your thoughts and feelings can be cathartic. Mindfulness techniques can help you stay present and manage stress. If emotional challenges become overwhelming, professional counseling is a valuable resource. It’s okay to seek help; you’re not alone in this.

Celebrating Milestones

Along this journey, it’s essential to celebrate more than just the numbers on the scale. Non-scale victories, like improved health, increased energy, and a better quality of life, deserve recognition. Setting and achieving realistic goals during your recovery is a powerful way to stay motivated.

Bariatric surgery is not just a physical transformation; it’s an emotional journey filled with ups and downs. Remember that it’s okay to experience a range of emotions. Seek support, be patient with yourself, and celebrate your progress along the way. Your emotional well-being is an essential part of your bariatric success.

As you navigate the emotional side of bariatric surgery, know that you’re on a path to a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life. This journey is not just about changing your body; it’s about transforming your life. Embrace it, and remember, you are not alone.

The Protein Shake Dilemma: Choose Wisely for Bariatric Success – Bariatric Edition

by Sheri Burke

Hello, my wonderful bariatric clients,

In the journey towards better health and wellness, protein is the cornerstone of success for many of us. Protein shakes have become an essential part of our daily routine, aiding us in meeting our protein goals. But not all protein shakes are created equal.

Today, let’s explore the importance of choosing the right protein shake, with a gentle spotlight on the “Bariatric Expert” protein shake, which boasts the magic of Prohydrolase® for Protein Digestion.

Why Protein Shakes Matter:

For bariatric patients, protein is the superstar of nutrition. It supports healing, muscle preservation, and overall vitality. But here’s the catch: post-surgery, our bodies may struggle to digest and absorb proteins efficiently. That’s where protein shakes come in. They’re a convenient way to ensure we meet our protein targets.

The Prohydrolase® Advantage:

What makes the “Bariatric Expert” protein shake stand out? It’s the inclusion of Prohydrolase® for Protein Digestion. This superhero enzyme blend is a game-changer for bariatric patients. Here’s why:

  • Enhanced Absorption: Prohydrolase® is like a key that unlocks the door to better protein absorption. It breaks down protein into smaller, more digestible peptides, making it easier for your body to absorb and utilize.
  • Reduced Discomfort: Many of us have experienced discomfort after a regular protein shake. Prohydrolase® helps reduce bloating and digestive discomfort, which can be a common issue for bariatric patients.
  • Faster Recovery: Whether you’re hitting the gym or just keeping up with daily life, the right protein shake can aid in muscle recovery and overall wellness.

The “Bariatric Expert” Protein Shake:

Why do we recommend the “Bariatric Expert” protein shake? It’s more than just the Prohydrolase® advantage. This shake is designed with bariatric patients in mind:

  • Protein Packed: Each serving contains a generous 26 grams of protein, helping you meet your daily requirements with ease.
  • Stevia Sweetened: It’s sweetened with stevia, a natural, bariatric-friendly sweetener that won’t spike your sugar levels or lead to unwanted cravings.
  • Convenient and Delicious: It’s an on-the-go solution that’s delicious and easy to incorporate into your daily routine.
  • Available at Your Fingertips: You can find the “Bariatric Expert” protein shake at www.bariatricfoodexpert.com, a trusted source for bariatric-friendly products.

Choosing Wisely for Your Bariatric Journey:

When selecting a protein shake, it’s more than just reading the label. Consider the ingredients and what sets it apart. Prohydrolase® and the thoughtful design of the “Bariatric Expert” shake make it a valuable addition to your post-surgery life.

Your bariatric journey deserves the best, and choosing the right protein shake is a step in the right direction. It’s not just about meeting your protein goals; it’s about optimizing your nutrition for lasting success.

Stay well, stay informed, and keep embracing the path to better health.
