Traveling to Mexico for Bariatric Surgery ?

by Sheri Burke

Are you considering having your Bariatric Surgery in Mexico.  You are then one of the thousands of people from all over the world who turn to Mexico to provide them with the most experienced coordinators and facilitators, surgeons and nursing teams who have been treating patients for many years.

You should ask questions such as: what pre.op tests are performed in Mexico, what post op testing is performed,  what about a pre.op diet, how much time do I need to take off work, what is included in my price, can I bring a friend or family member, is surgery at a hospital ?

Another important issues is your health form that is completed for your surgical team at the beginning of the process.  You need to be truthful when completing the forms and if anything changes between your initial health form and your surgery date, you must inform your facilitator of the changes.

There is a lot of information to sift through online and many services to choose from. It’s important to conduct your research – and when deciding on your team of bariatric experts, you should be confident that you made the right decision for you.

Dining-Traveling-Tips

by Sheri Burke

The Holidays are the perfect time to be with family, friends, and co-workers celebrating at different restaurants and homes. How can you make good choices when traveling and dining out?

Some easy tips to follow:

    1. Go online and review the menu PRIOR TO arriving at the restaurant so you can choose without pressure.
    2. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks. Drinking sugar will go straight to your belly because sugar stimulates the hormone insulin and insulin is our fat-storing hormone.
    3. Choose a meat like grilled fish, chicken or steak without sugary sauces or glazes. (Ask for it on the side)
    4. Choose steamed or roasted vegetables, even most airport restaurants allow you to order a side of veggies sautéed in olive oil or just steamed.
    5. If having a salad, use vinegar & oil for the salad dressing, because most dressings contain nasty oils and too much sugar.
    6. Ask to substitute carbs and starches for more veggies
    7. If traveling out of town sock up on plenty of nuts, nut butters, veggies, and low sugar fruits to have packed in a cooler for the ride.
    8. If flying, once you arrive at your destination stop at the local grocery store and buy fruits, vegetables, avocados, nuts, nut butters, seeds, etc so you always have something you can eat.
    9. If you are staying with family for several days offer to prepare a meal so you can show off your new healthy eating and cooking habits.
    10. Try to be the one picking the restaurant when dining out, most people love a leader.
    11. Don’t be afraid to say, “No thank you, I’m good”! Trust me, you will feel empowered by those words.

Keep Your Focus After Weight Loss Surgery

by Sheri Burke

We all know there is no such thing as perfection, but the longer you work towards eating and living healthy lifestyle habits it will happen

Bariatric Success is all about daily habits.  If you persistently expose yourself to good quality meats, veggies & fruit you eventually will “live it” with little effort or if you persistently expose yourself to sugar, carbs, and sweet desserts, eventually these will be part of your daily diet.

December is a month long party for many people, but the most important thing to protect is your daily habits.  Don’t let well meaning family members & friends influence your decisions.  One bite or drink can be all it takes.

One thing I know is that when you are focused on achieving goals you are less likely to let distractions knock you off track.  So pick ONE thing to focus on for the month of December to help stay the course.  ONE thing you do EVERYDAY, no matter what.  Here are a few examples:

  • Journal your thoughts
  • Exercise
  • Meditate
  • Keep a gratefulness journal
  • Tell one person you love them
  • Avoid negativity
  • Speak positive affirmations
  • Eat veggies at all 3 meals
  • Avoid sugar

All I know is, You can do it!  You’ve already overcome many obstacles just to have bariatric surgery, just keep going.  Feel free to share your victories and struggles in our Facebook Group.  I  would love to connect with you.

Are you following this Strategy ?

by Sheri Burke

Let’s face it, life is busy and we’ve been programmed to believe that we don’t have time to cook or prepare meals, and the solution is to pick up a meal-in-a-box or go through the drive-thru to feed our families. Although, there are times in life when this is truly the case, when it comes to avoiding and losing regain this cannot be the norm. It is what you are doing on a daily basis that impacts the number on the scale. Food is information and it tells your hormones and cells what to do and unfortunately, food that is packaged and processed isn’t telling your body to lose or maintain weight.

The good news is, you don’t need a college degree to cook whole, real food, and we are here to help simplifyweight loss food getting dinner on the table.  In order to get back in the kitchen cooking, start simple. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated and can be quicker than getting in your car and going through the drive-thru when you are prepared.

Keep an open mind and an experimental attitude and being in the kitchen will be a lot more fun.  Don’t be afraid to try new foods.

The Most Important thing is just to start cooking more meals at home.

Enjoy Dinner at Home!

Stay on Track This Thanksgiving

by Sheri Burke

Thanksgiving can be fun, full of laughter & memories, but stressful, and exhausting at the same time.  Follow these simple strategies to stay focused:bariatric-thanksgiven

  • Don’t skip breakfast, make a plan so that you eat first thing in the morning .  Have an egg or a green protein smoothie to balance blood sugars and keep cravings in control.
  • Take a dish you know is safe and in line with your pre or post op Bariatric Plan.
  • Fill 50% of your plate with veggies
  • Sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, this will prevent blood sugar spikes which will send you seeking sugar
  • Enjoy the turkey.  It is a great way to get good quality protein
  • Avoid all bread, rolls, noodles, and pasta
  • Avoid sugar, it is addictive and can take you down the wrong track.

Remember, if you want different results you can’t continue doing things the same.   Make Thanksgiving about friends and family.  Laugh a lot, play games, spend time with each other and fill up with love by giving love away.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Bariatrics: the easy way out ?

by Sheri Burke

As a patient coordinator/ liaison and a nutritionist, I stay close with patients before, after, and many years out from surgery. Sadly, there’s often a common misconception that patients who choose to have surgery are taking the “easy way out.” Short story – IMO : going under the knife is not copping out.

I find this an unfair comment. I have never seen a patient who hasn’t carefully considered the risks of surgery or what they will have to incorporate and eliminate from their lives afterward. Proactively choosing a surgical tool, when all other measures have failed, is a courageous example of taking personal responsibility for one’s health…not a stroll down Easy Street.

When an individual meets the BMI minimum and has had no luck with a long series of diet and exercise plans- bariatric surgery could be the tool helping them regain their health.

The journey after weight loss surgery is exciting, scary, motivating and hard. As more weight is lost, confidence grows but new challenges appear. Relationships can be tested; self-esteem may soar or sink. It’s no surprise that support during this journey is essential. Research repeatedly shows patients receiving professional, non-judgmental support after surgery lose the most weight and keep it off. Since surgery is only step 1 in the weight management marathon, it’s clear to me, patients choosing this option aren’t slackers at all-more like superheroes.
