Rise and Shine and Eat Breakfast Please. Bariatric Patients

by Sheri Burke

Are you one of the 12% that don’t eat breakfast or one of the more than 50% of people who skip it at least once a week!?  Post op bariatric patients need to take breakfast very seriously please.

I’m sure you’ve heard this a hundred times….but breakfast REALLY is the most important meal of the day!

People who skip breakfast will usually say it’s because they do not have enough time, would rather hit the snooze button, or simply do not have anything to eat at home.

Research has found that “skipping breakfast is associated with a significantly higher risk of obesity.”

And that’s not it!  If you eat a healthy breakfast…

  • It has been proven to improve spatial and short-term memory
  • It will boost your energy levels throughout the day
  • It will enhance your ability to concentrate, focus, and get stuff DONE!
  • It means you’ll be MORE likely to exercise more often
  • It means you’ll be less likely to drink alcohol and smoke

Want a few great options to choose from for a healthy breakfast!?

Keep it super easy !  Eggs, Greek Yogurt, Berries, Protein Shakes, Smoothies – there are so many healthy options.

Your challenge this week is to kick-start your day with a healthy breakfast!  No excuses allowed!

 Are you in?

Nobody said it was going to be easy but I promise you it’s worth it !

Feel free to share your victories and struggles in our Facebook Group.

Bariatric Patients – my clothes are too big

by Sheri Burke

Hey Bariatric Pre Ops and Post Ops!

Doesn’t it feel so good to clean out your closet and get rid of those old clothes that are just taking up space!? How about finally letting go of those pants you’ve been hanging on to forever! Let’s face it, they don’t fit you any more. You are a smaller size now and it’s just time to get it done.

It’s time to purge that closet!

Maybe it’s a pair of your favorite old jeans you used to wear every day that are falling off you.

Or maybe it’s that sweater that is just so comfy but so bit it now looks like a moo moo.

Your challenge right now is to block off some time to get in there and purge! I promise, you’ll thank me after!

Check out these 7 recommended questions to ask yourself while deciding:

  • Does this fit me?
  • Have I worn it anytime within the last year?
  • Is it likely I’ll ever wear it again?
  • Do I feel confident and good about myself when I wear this?
  • Does it reflect my style?
  • Have I had this for a while and are the tags still on it!?
  • If I saw this in the store right now, would I buy it? If you answer any NO’s on the questions above, then it’s probably time to say goodbye!

Once you’ve decided to break up with those items, take a minute to decide if you should donate or sell them.

Now that you’ve made some extra room in your closet, you just may want to go out and get something new!

It feels GREAT to get rid of the things that are too big.

Are you ready to say adios to some of those too big clothes?

Nobody said it was going to be easy but I promise you it’s worth it !

Feel free to share your victories and struggles in our Facebook Group.  I would love to connect with you.

Are you chewing enough? Bariatric Surgery

by Sheri Burke

Hey Bariatric Pre Ops and Post Ops!

Have you ever sat down to eat with someone and 30 seconds later they managed to eat their entire meal?

Or…have YOU ever been guilty of that!? Gasp!

Chewing your food not only allows you to appreciate and savor the taste of that delicious food, but it also plays a very important role in your digestion.

Chewing breaks down your food from large pieces into smaller, more manageable pieces in order to be easily digested.

It also makes it easier for your intestines to absorb the nutrients and energy from the food as it passes through your body.

If you’re like most people, you chew just enough naturally to where you can comfortably swallow your food – and you do it without even thinking about it.

However this week, I’m challenging you to chew your food even LONGER than that.

How much longer?!  How about trying at least 15-20 chews per bite!

That should slow things down enough for you to see some real improvements:

  1. The smaller the food particles are, the easier it is for your body to digest…so you’ll be able to absorb more nutrients and energy from your food!
  2. Salivary amylase actually starts breaking down carbohydrates in your mouth…so you’re getting a head start on digestion.
  3. You’ll eat LESS food. People eat about 10% less when they eat more slowly.
  4.  It’s good for your teeth and gums.
  5. You’ll enjoy your food a lot more!

Your challenge this week is to be more aware of how much chewing and how slowly you’re eating your food.

Take a bite and ENJOY it!!

You up for the “Chewing Challenge?”

Nobody said it was going to be easy but I promise you it’s worth it !

What to Eat After A Weight-Loss Surgery?

by Sheri Burke

Gastric sleeve surgery may be the solution to your weight related problems. It also serves as all the more reason for you to adopt a healthier and lifelong diet and lifestyle plan.

The ultimate goal of all bariatric surgery is to ‘provide physical change in digestive system that inevitably helps people to lose substantial weight’.

Note the definition; physical change means alteration to the stomach (and sometimes intestine) and helps lose weight which signals the effectiveness of this weight loss tool.

In the end, how well the surgery works depends more on the individual.

Weight-Loss Surgery without Appropriate Diet and Exercise Won’t Be Effective

It’s essential to follow recommended dietary guidelines (to the letter) after undergoing any weight-loss surgery. The following dietary guidelines have been carefully designed by certified healthcare providers and surgeons, specifically for individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery. End goal of this helpful guideline is limit calorie consumption while maintaining healthy weight and offering other benefits associated with having nutritionally balanced meals.

General Dietary Guidelines Following Bariatric Surgery

You should keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Eat nutritionally balanced meals, with small portions
  • Follow a diet that is low in fats, sugar, and calories
  • Record your daily calorie and protein intake as well as food portions
  • Eat slowly
  • Avoid meats that aren’t easily chewable, such as steak and pork
  • Avoid bread, rice, raw vegetables and fresh fruits
  • Drinking from straws or carbonated beverages can cause discomfort and must be avoided. Same goes for chewing ice
  • Avoid sugar and sugar containing food and beverages. Concentrated fruit juices and sweets must also be avoided

What to Eat Following Bariatric Surgery

Your calorie intake for the first two months, following the weight-loss surgery, should be between 300-600 calories per day, focusing on thin and thicker liquids.

Daily calories intake should not exceed 1,000 calories. So, keeping this in mind:

Fluids

Healthcare providers recommend drinking at least 8 cups (or 2 liters) of fluids daily. It will be difficult to reach this target early on, but gradually, you will get there.

Extra water and low calorie (or free) fluid between meals is recommended to avoid dehydration. Alcohol is also a no-zone as it will now be absorbed more quickly than before into your system, causing unpredictable mood-altering effects.

Protein

Muscle tissue can be adversely affected, following weight-loss surgery, but not if protein rich foods are added to your diet.

Foods high in protein are eggs, fish, ground meats, seafood, tuna, soy milk, poultry, cottage cheese, tofu, yoghurt and other milk products. Minimum protein requirement after weight-loss surgery is 65 to 75 grams in a day.

Supplements

The following supplements must be taken on a daily basis in addition to your diet, as these will prevent nutrient deficiencies. Remember to crush all pills or cut into 6-8 small pieces to help with the absorption process. You must take:

  • Multivitamins
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B12
  • Calcium Supplement
  • Iron and Folic Acid

Consult with your surgeon performing bariatric surgery regarding how much of each supplement is the required dosage.

The guidelines must be remembered and followed to prevent eating disorders like bulimia, anorexia, etc., which normally happens when dietary guidelines are foregone.

Gastric Bypass Surgery In Mexico – BMI Requirements You Must Fulfill To Qualify

by Sheri Burke

Tired of your fancy crash diets that don’t work and exercise plans that don’t work fast enough?

Gastric bypass surgery might be your answer. Did you know you must pass certain BMI requirements to qualify for gastric bypass surgery, especially in Mexico?

Body Mass Index or BMI applies to most adult women and men aged 20 and over.

What is BMI?

BMI is the measure of body fat in relation to height and weight. Basically, it’s a screening tool that can be used to determine if a person is underweight, overweight, obese, or a healthy weight for their height.

Another advantage is keeping a lookout on health risks—proper weight maintenance is necessary for increased health. So if a person’s BMI is outside of healthy range, health risks may significantly increase.

How to Calculate BMI

The same BMI values can be used for both genders and are also age-dependent. Body mass index is calculated based in the following formula:

BMI Formula: Bodyweight in kilograms divided by height, in meters squared or BMI = x KG/ (y M * y M)

Where KG x is bodyweight and y is height in m.

There are many reasons for maintaining a healthy weight but sometimes it’s impossible, despite healthy eating, diet and exercise.

Gastric bypass surgery is the answer for many who have tried everything but cannot shed those extra 10 pounds or so.

BMI Requirements for Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is often seen as a last alternative for obese or overweight people trying to lose weight. Keep in mind that this surgery shouldn’t be considered an effective weight-loss tool. It isn’t a weight-loss tool and should only be considered in dire cases of obesity or considerable weight.

Another requirement of this particular weight-loss surgery is that you must be between the ages of 16 and 70 years old for ideal results.

Everyone who has successfully undergone gastric bypass or any weight-loss surgery knows how much dedication and effort is required to maintain weight while practicing healthy eating habits and lifestyle.

Book a consultation with a certified bariatric surgeon with the help of International Patient Facilitators.

Taking Care of Yourself Post WLS

by Sheri Burke

Unfortunately many bariatric patients will find themselves in this same predicament.  They have spent so much time preparing for the actual surgery and the build up to it, and they have not thought about “what comes next” and what the body needs to lose weight and to keep it off.  Bariatric surgery is just a tool to aid patients to achieve long term weight loss goals.  Patients need to become their own nutritionists and they need to understand food and why they gained weight in the first place.  If they do not make important changes, they will eventually regain the weight that they lose post operatively.

There is a honeymoon, healing period for the first 6 weeks post operatively. During this timeframe it is extremely important that you follow the post operative guidelines that are given to you by your Patient Facilitator/ Surgeon’s office.  During the healing period, we are less concerned about a patients weight loss and more concerned that they heal well after their surgery.  Patients need to give their bodies time to heal and this vital for a good recovery.

Price list for Bariatric Procedures in Tijuana and Cancun

Every patient loses weight at a different rate so it’s important not to compare your journey to others.  Some patients lose more quickly and others lose more slowly.  Protein will be the key through your entire weight loss surgery journey. You are aiming for 60 to 80 grams of protein per day.  If you do not follow this rule, you will lose muscle mass and feel tired and weak.  You will also lose your hair – so eat your protein please.  Let’s just avoid this altogether.

Stay hydrated – sip sip sip please.  Water is the preferred liquid for all post op bariatric patients but if you have a hard time guzzling your H20, then feel free to add a sugar free flavour to your water.  If you do become dehydrated you are going to feel terrible.  Let’s avoid this – drink up.

If you want to achieve maximum weight loss surgery success, then you are going to have to exercise.  Along with your dietary guidelines, you need to move more.  Don’t discount exercise as less important to you diet.  The two go hand in hand and you need to get up and get going.  Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each and every week.  If you slip up one week, just get up and  get going the next week. Don’t allow a week to turn into a month.

Weight loss surgery is only a tool to help you lose the weight and keep it off. You are going to have to work hard to be successful both long and short term.  You need to make the changes necessary to get you where you want to go.  You can do it!
