According to a study by WHO (World Health Organization), since 1980, the number of obese people has doubled worldwide.
According to their study, more than 1.9 billion adults are now overweight, with 600 million in the obese ratio. Because of the increase in weight and harmful fat, many obese people are now suffering from numerous health-related problems, some of which are listed below:
Health Effects of Obesity
Coronary Heart Disease
A rise in your body mass index can also increase the risk of coronary heart disease. This condition occurs when a waxy substance known as plaque starts building up inside the arteries. Since the arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart, the blockages cause the blood flow to reduce. That in turn, can cause an angina or a heart attack.
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure or hypertension is caused when the blood is forced against the walls of the arteries as the heart muscle pumps blood. The pressure with which the blood is forced can rise and stay risen for periods of time, which can damage the body in many ways.
Stroke
A stroke is caused when there is a plaque buildup in your arteries. When that plaque buildup ruptures, it causes a blot clot to form. When that clot gets close to your brain, it gets stuck as a block which narrows down the passage of blood and oxygen to your brain, which in turn, causes a stroke.
Diabetes – Type 2
Diabetes is a very common disease amongst overweight people. This disease occurs when the blood sugar level becomes too high in the body. Normally the body breaks down the food into glucose by using a hormone known as insulin.
However, in type-2 diabetes, the cells in our body fail to utilize insulin properly. And although first the body makes more insulin to combat this issue, overtime, the body fails to sustain the insulin needed to control the blood sugar level.
Cancer
Patients that are obese can also suffer from different types of cancer since the extra weight can increase the risk of colon cancer, breast cancer, endometrial and gallbladder cancer.
Osteoarthritis
Our bones and joints suffer a lot of pain due to the excessive weight gain; the most common areas affected being the knees, hips and lower back. This happens because the tissue that protects these joints wears away due to the added pressure, causing pain.
Sleep Apnea
As a common disorder, sleep apnea occurs in overweight people specifically when they have fat stored around the neck. The fat causes the airway to narrow, making it harder for the person to breathe. This causes the person to have shallow breaths when they sleep and can even result in pauses when they are breathing.
Reproductive Problems
There has been a direct correlation between obesity and reproductive problems. Obesity affects a woman’s menstrual cycle and can cause hormonal imbalances and ovulation issues, which can in turn, cause fertility problems. Being overweight can cause obese men to have a low sperm quality and erectile dysfunction.
So what’s the solution?
For all these issues, the best way to combat obesity is not only by following a healthy diet and regime but also by opting for bariatric weight loss surgery.
