Taking Post Bariatric Guidelines on a Vacation

by Sheri Burke

Allow us to share some information with you.

When you’re on vacation, it may be very easy to abandon the lifestyle changes you have been developing.  The downside is, when you return home you often have feelings of guilt and remorse about the choices you made while on vacation.  Then, as you follow-up with the office to weigh, the consequences show up on the scales

It isn’t necessary to make weight loss the main goal of your vacation; however, maintaining your weight is a realistic target.  Consider the following tips to keep your health in line while on vacation this year.

Tip 1. Be Prepared.

Whether you travel by plane or automobile, always be prepared.  Keep healthy food options around so you will not be tempted to grab whatever is available.  Pack a cooler full of satisfying small meals and beverages.  Lean lunch meat, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit can take the place of fast-food and convenience store foods.  Protein bars, tuna/chicken packets, and single serve peanut butter are convenient travel foods that do not have to be refrigerated.  Packing these foods will also save you money.  However, even though the food is available do not be tempted to snack around the clock.  Delays and boredom are bound to happen.  Don’t let this be an excuse to overeat.

Tip 2. Select Sensible Choices.

Make sensible choices when dining out.  It is easy to break your calorie budget by eating foods that are fried.  Ask that foods be baked, broiled, or grilled.  Be cautious however, because some restaurants still add fat (such as butter and oil) to these dishes.  You may request that your food be made without added fat.

Avoid child menus and appetizer menus.  These foods are often higher in fat and the dipping sauces are loaded with sugar and calories.  Foods higher in fat tend to stimulate appetite which cause you to consume more calories.

Make water a part of your meal.  It fills you up and never lets you down.  Don’t forget to fluid load!  Fluid loading on 4-8 oz prior to a meal helps fill your pouch and prevent over eating.  Remember not to drink with the meals as this can cause hunger after meals and an increase in calories at meals.

Tip 3. Don’t Forget Exercise

Select a vacation that requires you to be active.  Choose a hotel that is within walking distance of popular attractions.  If you choose a destination close to the ocean, make it a point to walk the shore line each day.  If a body of water is accessible, participate in recreational aquatics.  Sometimes hotels and resorts have an exercise room – use it!  If you can’t exercise, be active daily.

Tip 4. Slow Down and Consider What you are Eating

While on vacation, it is often common to socialize while dining out.  You may not realize that you are eating as much as you are if you are not paying attention.  Since restaurants serve larger portion sizes, request that a to-go box be brought to the table with your meal so you are not tempted to ever eat.  If you want to sit around the table and socialize, simply remove the food plates so you are not tempted to graze.  The same mentality should be used for calorie-filled drinks

Eat your Greens – Bariatric Surgery

by Sheri Burke

Eating Greens – Post Bariatric Surgery

Greens and more Greens

Learning to eat again after bariatric surgery can often be difficult, and knowing what foods to reintroduce to your meal plan can be challenging. Let’s take a closer look at bringing fruits and vegetables back into your daily routine.

Fruits and vegetables are a part of a healthy diet after bariatric surgery. For most bariatric surgery patients who are still in the weight-loss phase, to achieve the best results you are watching the protein, calorie and carbohydrates you ingest like a hawk. Your meals should focus primarily on protein from a lean protein source. And for variety, a low-carb vegetable can be added if you have room. Focusing on the low-carb vegetables versus higher carbohydrate vegetables in your meals will give you a better recipe for success while losing weight and improving your health.

To help avoid any difficulties, avoid raw fruits and vegetables the first two months after bariatric surgery and eat them cooked until that point. After the first two months, you are welcome to enjoy eating salads (iceberg is not tolerated as well as romaine or spinach) and raw vegetables to compliment your protein. Lettuce wraps are a great way to change up your protein and add a little low-carb crunch!

Fruit should be eaten sparingly for maximum weight-loss or wait until your goal weight to add the extra carbs that come with eating fruit. The average serving of fruit has about 15 grams of carbohydrates, which can add up quickly throughout the day.

If you are at your goal weight and can add more carbs into your diet, chose from lower carbohydrate fruits, such as watermelon, grapefruit and cantaloupe.

Maximise your Meals

Nature is hinting to us to be creative and use the all-natural herbs, spices, lemon and garlic to transform ordinary vegetables into a unique and flavourful dish. Maximise your variety by choosing fruits and vegetables that are in season for the best flavours and textures. Search for what fruits and vegetables are in season online or at your local grocer. Vary your vegetables not only in the way you spice them, but vary in their colours too. For example, if you only are accustomed to eating green bell peppers, branch out and try the red, orange and yellow varieties. You will not only get a more colourful plate, but you will be getting a variety of different antioxidants that vegetables are celebrated for in their health benefits.

Much success in your journey.

Adding Real Food

by Sheri Burke

Learning to add food back to your diet after surgery.

What is “normal food”?

Once released to go on your merry way and eat ‘real’ or ‘normal’ foods proceed with caution.  Many post ops live in the Soft Food Zone forever – not purees or baby food, but just softer moister foods. Foods will need to have a softer texture in the beginning in order to comfortably eat them. Dry or dense foods will not work for a Lap Band, RNY, or Gastric Sleeve after your surgery. We also need to move away from processed foods as well. If a food has been changed from it’s original state and boxed or packaged where it does not go bad, leave it on the supermarket shelf.

Welcome to the real world of bariatric surgery. Protein foods such as chicken or fish need to be cooked so they are not dried out and then often need to be further moistened with salsa’s sauces, low fat vegetable gravies, salad dressing, low or no sugar sauces, or yogurt based dips so that they chew up into a moist mouthful. We must always practice mindful eating in regards to choices and textures.

Tuna, chicken, shrimp, and egg salads are very good first foods and make nice lunches for work. Paired with a few bites of tender baby greens or chopped tossed salad, they are super easy to eat and healthy too.

Do you qualify for bariatric surgery ?

Positive Changes for the Entire Family

It is not a good idea to get into the habit of cooking separate meals as it can emotionally separate you from your family. We are often responsible for the care and feeding of the household and they probably benefit from the positive change as well.

Always eat your moist protein first, followed by a couple of bites of the accompanying vegetables. Three bites protein for every one bite of vegetables is a good start – later on it will be a more balanced one for one bite.

When you have a feeling of satisfaction and do not care about eating another bite of food, stop. Do not eat past a point of satisfaction or fullness. As time progresses you will learn to recognize this point.

Much success in your journey.

Bariatric Just. Do. It.

by Sheri Burke

Exercise that’s not hard on the knees.  Excuse Gone.  Poof.

our dirty little secret ?

I get that we all thought that if we had weight loss surgery it would fix things and we would never need to worry again. That’s just not true.

Surgery Gave us a pass to get out from under the weight but now it’s up to us to preserve that gift.

We cannot expect to maintain our new body weights for the rest of a long life without exercise. The dirty little bariatric secret. I know we aren’t supposed to admit it, but I get it and it’s just between us.

Do you qualify for bariatric surgery ?

Own It.

Too many post ops use the excuse that they have bad legs, knees, ankles… and because of this they CANNOT exercise. Fact is, it’s an excuse. It’s from the same group of excuses we all used for years as to why we were 255 pounds. I DONT UNDERSTAND IT, I DONT EAT THAT MUCH, I MUST JUST HAVE A BAD METABOLISM. Psssst… it is bs. I ate very high calorie food, took in way more calories than I burned, and didnt burn any sitting on the sofa. I own it.

Just a LITTLE exercise you can do – I promise that it will make a big difference!

Much success in your journey.
