Keto Keto keto, it’s all you hear about today – the ketogenic diet. It’s everywhere. Your Mom’s doing it, your best friend is trying it and your neighbour talks non-stop about it. But can you, as a bariatric patient try the ketogenic diet and will it work for you ?
The short definition of ketosis is: when the body is fueled almost entirely by fat. This happens when you eat a diet which is very low in carbohydrates. The name “ketosis” comes from “ketones,” which are considered a type of fuels which your body runs on when you have depleted your glucose stores (blood sugar). There is a whole bunch of science involved but the positive thing about ketosis is that it increases your body’s ability to burn fat.
Lucky for our clients, I am a bariatric expert but also a nutritionist specializing in bariatric pre and post operative care. I help bariatric clients take the best of Keto that move them towards their weight loss and nutritional goals and leaves the rest of it behind. I use a Ketogenic nutrimental plan minus this following list to make our program “Bariatric Keto”. Here are foods which you are NOT going to be eating on this keto plan….
- Blankets of full fat cheese
- Unlimited Bacon
- Tons of butter
But the good news is that we will be eating some of the really good stuff that the keto community thrives on such as:
- Seafood, Meats and Poultry
- Lots of low carb veggies
- Avocados
- Eggs
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Cottage Cheese and Ricotta
- Nuts and Seeds
- Berries
- Olives
- Coffee and Tea
- Dark Chocolate
