The Gastric Sleeve Surgery

 

Gastric Sleeve Surgery is an established procedure that induces loss by restricting food intake and reducing the production of the hunger hormone.

 

With this procedure, the surgeon removes approximately 70-80% of the stomach (through only a few very small incisions) so that the stomach takes the shape of a tube or “sleeve”, like a long sleeve shirt. This is the simplest, least invasive gastric surgery available. It is permanent, so it reduces the risk of regaining the weight later in life. The Gastric Sleeve is the fastest growing Gastric Surgery in the world due to its success and safety.

 

The Gastric Sleeve is much more effective than the Lap-Band, and equally or more effective, with fewer complications than the Gastric Bypass (RNY).

 

Most patients can expect to reduce 80-100% of their excess body mass over a 12 – 24 month period with the gastric sleeve.

 

As you may have heard, the Gastric Sleeve eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces Ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger. Because Ghrelin is made in your stomach, and your stomach is mostly removed, you will feel significantly less hungry after the surgery. No other gastric surgery offers this benefit! This combined with the fact that you will feel full much faster when eating, creates easy and reduction. Here are some facts about the surgery:

 

• Stomach volume is reduced, but it continues to function normally so most food items can be consumed in small amounts.
• Unlike the Gastric Bypass, there are no concerns with Dumping Syndrome because the pylorus is preserved.
• Unlike the Gastric Bypass, there is no rerouting of the intestines, thereby eliminating problems with malnutrition. By avoiding the intestinal bypass, the chance of intestinal obstruction (blockage), anemia, osteoporosis, protein deficiency, and vitamin deficiency are virtually eliminated.
• Eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces the hormone that stimulates hunger (Ghrelin).
• Minimizes the chance of an ulcer occurring.
• Very effective as a first stage procedure for high BMI patients (BMI >55 kg/m2).
• Excellent results as a single stage procedure for low BMI patients (BMI 35-45 kg/m2).
• An appealing option for people with existing anemia, Crohn’s disease, and numerous other conditions that make them too high risk for intestinal bypass procedures.
• Diabetes Type II patients are often cured of the symptoms of diabetes!

 

What’s Included?

 

Everything for your surgery is included in the price.

You will need to pay for your airfare only.

 

1.-All ground transportation. We will pick you up in San Diego, and we will drive you back to the San Diego airport to fly home after you recover.
2.-Pre-Operatory Tests: EKG, X-Ray, Blood tests, etc., are all included in your price.
3.-2 nights in our hospital and the remaining night in a hotel
4.-Hospital Fees.
5.-Surgeons Fees.
6.-Anesthesiologist Fees.
7.-Postoperative testing included
8.-24 hour telephone care for question and concerns.

 

For surgery, you will fly into San Diego, California the day prior to surgery.  You can arrive at any time of the morning, afternoon, evening.  No late night flights please.

 

From there, our driver will take you to the five star Grand Hotel for your first night.  This is considered a “free day”.

 

Pick up is 9am in the morning from the hotel to go to the hospital.  It is a 10 minute drive.  You will get checked in, complete paperwork, and have  your pre-op testing performed. You will have surgery later that day and then spend two nights at the Obesity Goodbye Center.

 

On your last day, we perform post-op testing and drive you back to the San Diego airport for your flight home that same afternoon. We suggest an early-late afternoon flight and our driver will pick you up 4 hours before your flight to allow plenty of time to go through customs. We would be happy to go over this itinerary with you on the phone or through email, whichever you prefer.

If you are bringing a guest, they are welcome to join you at no extra cost.  Your guests will be required to get their own meals at their expense. We have plenty of meal options available for your guests.

 

Dr. Sergio Verboonen has an infection rate of less than 0.1% and a leak rate of less than 0.1%. We perform three leak tests before you leave.
